GLBTQ & Allies Awareness Month
GLBTQ History (Awareness) Month is a month-long annual international and national observance of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.
October was chosen because of the recognized National Coming Out Day already established as a widely known event on October 11. In addition, October commemorated the first march on Washington by GLBTQ people in 1979.
After the successful events organized by Texas Tech University, Student Diversity Relations in the fall of 2008, a GLBTQ & Allies Awareness Steering Committee was formed to continue planning and scheduling events. As of 2011 the committee is now housed under the South Plains only virtual GLBTQ Community Center, OUTwest Lubbock. The name has been changed to OUTwest Lubbock PRIDE committee and meets regularly.
If you would like to become more involved in the planning of events please contact OUTwest Lubbock by email: email@example.com
As a coalition of the Lubbock community and Texas Tech University community, coordinated events are intended to encourage honesty and openness about being gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer and ally.
Q: Are you an educator needing a resource to request guest speakers?
A: If yes, then consider hosting a “PFLAG Panel Discussion” - PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) Lubbock promotes the health and well-being of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender persons and their families and friends through support, education, and advocacy to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. Members of PFLAG Lubbock will be happy to speak to your class about issues relevant to GLBTQ students and their family and friends. Please contact the President at firstname.lastname@example.org with questions or to schedule this program in your classroom.
